What Is Social Emotional Learning (SEL)?
-
Social emotional learning (SEL) refers to the process of developing social and emotional competencies, such as self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. These competencies help us to understand and manage our emotions, build positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. SEL is an important factor in student performance and well-being. SEL is a key component of success throughout life, including in the workplace. As we prepare students for their future, we keep in mind that people who have strong social and emotional skills are better able to communicate with others, manage stress and conflict, and work effectively in teams. For more information on the importance of SEL for students and adults, please read the Fundamentals of SEL.
